If I know someone who died of breast cancer and I object to Genie speaking out on this, then is that all that should matter and she should just shut up?
I ain't sayin' I actually want her to shut up, rather I'm just sayin'...

Yeah right.
Are you a student in that middle school? We're not speaking about one person, we're talking about a campaign that makes light of the disease. And we're talking about a school, not an internet forum.

| Every woman from my grandfathers side has died from a sort of cancer. Bringing awareness to this cause is why im posting this forum. I know that my family and friends agree that the bracelets should not be banned; the bracelets help make it easier to talk about.

Genie (1/26/2011) It doesn't matter at all what you or I or the moderator or the person who owns this company thinks, if a victim or relative is upset by it, that's what's most important.
Who are you to say that it does not matter what I think?

Kailey - that's sad about your family. I have had a lot of cancer deaths in my family too. And I know how hard it is. That's why I'm suggesting maybe someone in the school objected for personal reasons. Their feelings are important. There were ways to contribute before this program and they still exist. There are always people who bring awareness. Football and other sports tams wear pink; teachers, students and principals do things like shave their hair off in exchange for contributions.; there are walks to raise money and awareness.
Here are some:
Susan Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Breast Cancer Charities of America (BCCA)
Pink Ribbon Charities
But you also said this in another post:
Whats next, banning support the war themes and crosses/ religon items?
The "Boobies" case has nothing to do with supporting the war or wearing crosses..

Are you saying only the feelings of those you agree with are important?

The principle decided that the kids were wearing them just for giggles.
I could see this in middle school, but is it enough reason to ban the bracelets? In my opinion, no.
The company that makes these bracelets is a non-profit organization whose intentions are to help spread breast cancer awareness.
It doesn't sound like the company had an interest in making light of cancer, but raising awareness and money using clever marketing (similar to "Save second base," Save the ta tas," etc.). It's not uncommon and actually really popular. I've seen all three now in different places.
Genie, the comparison of those pink bracelets to crosses or war themes is to show similarities in being free to express oneself with symbols. Some symbols ok, some not. Why the difference -is the point being made, I believe.

Is breast cancer funny?

Kids in school have been told they cannot wear swastikas, peace signs and all sorts of thing. There is really no 1st amendment right to free speech for kids in school. The school administrators make the rules and kids follow them. That's life! You know, life sucks and then you die.
If a kid has a mother who is dying of breast cancer, that is a very traumatic thing. To come to school and see kids laughing about it would be pretty upsetting.

That depends on who gets it.
