The residents of Maine rejected their legislatures attempt to force the idea of homosexual marriage down their throats despite massive spending on the part of homosexuals. Good for the people of Maine.
yahoo report
Gay marriage has now lost in every single state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote. Gay-rights activists had hoped to buck that trend in Maine — known for its moderate, independent-minded electorate — and mounted an energetic, well-financed campaign.

It's a dangerous precedent when basic civil and human rights can be deprived to a group on the whim of the electorate. Who's next to have their rights rescinded on the whim of a referendum?

Neither marriage nor any sexual perversion are rights (civil, human, constitutional or otherwise)so no one has been deprived. The abilitiy of the people (and not the whim of a few gov officials) to determine what is right or wrong has been preserved, and thats a good thing.

If marriage is not a constitutionally protected right, then what is this Supreme Court case about?

Should the ability of the people to determine what is right and wrong include burning people for witchcraft? How about enslaving people based on pigmentation? Should people be disenfranchised because they lack a Y chromosome?

You might want to look into the equal protection clause before you decide that depriving a minority of rights enjoyed by a majority is a good thing.

Weird thing is that on the same ballot the state voted to expand medical marijauna. (It was already legal, but more restricted) Same thing happened in California as well....medical marijauna passed but gay marriage banned.

I'm not exactly sure what that means, but it means something kinda kooky....

It is. Maybe with medical marijuana legal, these people will get stoned before voting next time and vote the right way on the gay marriage issue.

If civil rights would have been put to the vote in the South during the 1960s, Jim Crow would still be alive.

Just sayin'.

How exactly is scociety bettered by banning gay marriage? I mean it gives fundie homophobes something to do, but that's about it.

No one has been able to give me one concrete reason why these people should be deprived of a basic tenet of human dignity.
