Sex education courses would have to tell students about the proper use of condoms and other forms of birth control, as well as their health benefits and side effects, if the bill became law. Students also would have to be told about how to prevent sexually transmitted disease.

What is it with conservatives pushing abstinence? Didn't they learn from Brystol Palin?

The irony too is that the same people who are anti-abortion are also against the methods that would prevent abortions.

The bill removes the power of local school boards to decide what should or should not be taught about sex education.

When the Republicans were in power, conservatives, in their push for abstinence-only sex education, were all for removing the power of local school boards.

If the Republican leadership ever wants to gain power again, they'll jettison the Bible thumpers. Smaller government and theocracy are two different things.

That's not consistent with my memory, but yours may differ. In any case, thankfully, they were unsuccessful.

Jesus C, you've gotten to the point where you're as bad as a Bible Thumper!

This idea of yours that we can simply "jettison" them is as stupid as the idea of abstinence-only sex ed!!

Yes, they are irritating and annoying, yes, they spend entirely too much time thumping the Bible and not enough time reading it, yes, theocracy is anathema to a free society, BUT THEY AREN'T GOING ANYWHERE ANYTIME SOON!!!

Besides, I'm not so sure the Bible Thumpers are the issue here. The article doesn't claim it to be the case. The article says "Republicans offered amendments - rejected by Democrats - that would have required schools to teach students about fetal development and the potential for criminal charges against underage students for having sex." That does not sound like an unreasonable amendment to me, and nowhere does it preclude teaching about birth control!

I think you're starting to see Bible Thumpers lurking in your shadow the way they see Satan lurking in theirs.

Are you holding those Republicans up as an example that should be followed or are you saying that "Two wrongs make a right"? Please clarify....

While I agree that much of the Dem opposition is little more than hate for the Republicans, why not jettison them? I'm aware they're not going anywhere anytime soon (except for Oklahoma maybe), so they can always form their own party. The fact is these are not simply people who want to practice their religion: these are people who want us to practice their religion as well and are willing to use the organs of government to make that happen.

I'm telling ya, watch these people carefully. They're just as bad, if not worse, than the leftie health nuts.
