Description: Welcome to the 1000 Friends of Wisconsin community page.
Mission Statement
1000 Friends of Wisconsin was created to protect and enhance Wisconsin's urban and rural landscapes by providing citizens with the inspiration, information and tools they need to effectively participate in the decisions that have the greatest impact on community health: where we live, work, learn, play and how we get from one place to another. We accomplish our work through three major efforts:
(1) Promoting Implementation of Smart Growth
(2) Policy Development and Advocacy
(3) Research and Information Sharing
Our work focuses on helping communities make the connection between our everyday land use and transportation decisions and our state's economic, environmental and cultural health.

Vision Statement
We envision a Wisconsin where...
Our cities and villages are...
desirable, affordable, peaceful places to live, work and play.
prosperous, safe and healthy places that offer opportunity for everyone.

compact, efficient, beautiful places that are designed around the needs of people.
Our rural lands...
encompass the majority of the Wisconsin landscape and contain vast open places full of wildlife and wildness, intermingled with...
prosperous farms managed by farm families who are rewarded for their vital role as providers of food and fiber, and their conscientious stewardship of our soil, water, air, wildlife

Description: The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is a private not-for-profit organization created in 1994 to promote environmental education in the region through the operation of a state-of-the-art nature center in Monona and the establishment of Nature Net, The Environmental Learning Network. A second facility, the Black Earth Campus was added in 2003. Our primary services are naturalist-led programs on the land and in the classroom, family programming, after-school programs, summer camps, seasonal family programs, scout and homeschool programs, special events and teacher training workshops. Service populations include more than 30,000 school children, families and teachers each year across the state of Wisconsin.
Recognizing the need to provide opportunities to connect children with nature throughout their youth, ALNC utilizes both facilities for its innovative and hands-on environmental education programming. The Monona Campus, with its gentle, glaciated patchwork of child-scaled oak savanna, wetlands, prairies and woodlands is the ideal setting for young children to explore the wonders of the natural world. Yet as these children grow they need the challenge and stimulation the rugged unglaciated terrain at the Black Earth Campus provides. From toddlers to teens, ALNC “...teaches the student to see the land, to understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands,” in the spirit of renowned ecologist Aldo Leopold.
Our mission is to "...teach the student to see the land, understand what he sees, and enjoy what he understands." in the spirit of famed Wisconsin conservationist, Aldo Leopold.
It is our hope that by teaching the importance of maintaining the symbiotic relationship humans have with the environment and each other, students will make the right environmental choices. We believe that a sustainable future is possible, by working together, to empower the next generation of conservationists.

Description: The aims and objectives of the Bill Jordan Wildlife Defense Fund USA are simple. BJWDFUSA provides immediate aid to wildlife in distress anywhere in the world. We work with local people and government bodies in an attempt to alleviate the suffering of wild animals. We help projects in Africa and Asia, supporting their vital work to protect, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, lions, hippos and tigers.
Education also plays a part. BJWDF USA sponsors key people who are already working in the wildlife sector. We believe that by funding further education, such as M.Scs and PhDs, for people living in underpriviledged countries, we help both the animals and the people who are working for and with them. It is a priority of BJWDF USA to fund important ecological studies and animal welfare investigations and legislation.

Description: Boliviamanta Dance Group was founded June 12, 2006. In Quechua Boliviamanta means “made in Bolivia” or “from Bolivia”
Members of the group are children, their parents and young adults of various ethnic backgrounds joined in collaboration to bring Bolivian Folkloric dances to life.
The costumes are imported from Bolivia as well as designed and hand made by the Director and co-founder, Cecilia Miranda, whose personal goal and interest is to provide the dancers with a way to build self-esteem and to re-live Bolivian traditions by way of dancing. "Dance is an important part of who we are"
The dances that Boliviamanta presents are carnival dances, which are performed particularly in the city of Oruro-Bolivia. Unlike other carnivals around the world, the “Carnaval de Oruro” has a deep religious concept linked to the devotion of the “Virgen Del Socavon” and “Pachamama” or Mother Earth. Each dance is traditional, has a story to tell and a history.
All members are volunteers, part take in creating the choreographies, many with years of dance experience who teach one another the intricate steps; they learn the story and history behind the dances by way of watching videos and for many taught by their parents.
Boliviamanta thus far has performed at Madison’s Overture Center, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, various Madison area international festivals, parades; as well as High and Grade Schools. In 2007 Boliviamanta joined forces with Renacer Boliviano to perform year after year at the famous Chicago Thanksgiving Parade.
